Chapter 21

I drive with Cassandra lounging in the passenger’s seat next to me. We take the back roads to the industrial park like I used to all that time ago. It’s a longer drive, but it keeps us under the cops’ radar. We ride in silence, and by eight o’clock, we arrive at the industrial park located in the eastern part of New Tacoma. There’s already a crowd despite the early hour, a mix of teenagers and adults. A few races are underway.

I park the car away from the crowd, close to the park’s entrance. As I get out the car, a strange feeling wells up in my gut. Something is wrong, but I’m not sure what it is. It must be the memories. I made a lot of good ones here with my crew—I can still envision where we used to park almost every night, despite the sea of cars and people. All of our cars would be parked in a neat row, showing off new paint, or some fancy new mod…

My eyes burn. I miss you guys. So much…

“Hey!” Cassandra calls.

Her voice jolts me from my thoughts. She waves at me, and then makes her way toward the crowd.

I frown. I know they weren’t exactly close, but has she really gotten over their deaths so quickly? Or does she just know how to deal with this kind of shit? It’s like her mind and emotions are made of steel. Or maybe a woman like her has seen so much death in her life that she’s become numb to it.

I can’t imagine how that must feel…

Shoving my hands in my pockets, I slowly make my way toward the crowd. As I draw nearer to a race in progress, I notice something strange. These aren’t normal drag races. In fact, they don’t look like drag races at all. The entire area has been converted into a massive, makeshift racetrack with sets of cones spread throughout. Two dressed-up cars zoom by, expertly sliding around sharp corners in a smoky cloud of squealing tires.

I clench my jaw. Drifters…

I search the spectators. I don’t recognize any of the faces here. Hell, everything about this place feels foreign, even myself, here and now. I feel like such an outcast, like I don’t belong. The sounds of the roaring engines and the smell of exhaust and burned rubber don’t seem to trigger my competitive urge. Instead, they’re just white noise.

I discover Cassandra away from the main crowd, exchanging words with the only group I recognize—Jacob and the Ninez.

Jacob still has that same hint of fear in his eyes. His lackeys, Preston and Bryce, still accompany him like the mindless cronies they are. Jacob has picked up four more recruits I don’t recognize too. They all look to be about my age or slightly younger. I pity them following a coward like Jacob around.

I walk up to the group, and Jacob stops talking. His gaze swivels from Cassandra to me.

“Oh, look who’s back from the dead.” He sneers.
